A Wellington County resident has misplaced round $500,000 in a cryptocurrency rip-off, in keeping with Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
On Thursday, OPP stated the resident is from the Township of Wellington North.
It was not instantly clear if the person despatched the $500,000 as one fee or as a number of funds, nor when the cash have been despatched.
Wellington County OPP are encouraging residents to go to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) to study fraud prevention.
In accordance with the CAFC, the utilization of cryptocurrency in fraud elevated by 238 per cent from 2020 to 2021.
In 2020, the CAFC stated roughly $165 million was reported in sufferer losses. In 2021, this quantity elevated to $379 million.
“Globally, Canadians rank close to the highest when it comes to size of time spent on-line and are placing extra private data on-line than ever earlier than,” the CAFC 2021 annual report says. “Whereas this development will be partially attributed to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, the digital setting is predicted to proceed rising.”
